Poultry Worker

Look after poultry birds through every stage of their lives, up to the time of slaughter

Overview

The poultry worker was approved for delivery on 07/06/2018. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 12 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The Poultry Worker apprenticeship is a course that sets the apprentice up to take on all the practical roles involved in every stage of poultry’s life, except slaughter. The job role involves being the primary contact for the birds. As such, the apprentice will be responsible for supporting the animals and maintaining their habitat.

This responsibility means that the apprentice must be compassionate, able to work independently as well as in a team and be able to register the needs of the birds. To be able to carry out their tasks with those core behaviours, they must have a comprehensive understanding of health and safety practices, how their equipment works and is maintained and know the industries legislative standards thoroughly.

Throughout the apprenticeship, the apprentice will learn essential skills that will propel them into any future career. These include punctuality, consistency, diligence in quality, welfare, health and safety, taking ownership, independent initiative, respect for the animals and their colleagues, being adaptable and the resilience to keep working hard.

Depending on the size of the facility in which the apprentice is working, they may eventually specialise. The four areas of the role in which the apprentice may specialise are rearing, breeding, hatching, egg production or growing.
