Leading the way to develop and implement new technologies in the energy sector
Overview
Approved for delivery on the 16/02/2017, the power engineer (degree), Degree apprenticeship standard provides a level 7, integrated degree upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 60 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
Power Engineer apprentices will work within one of the three power sectors: Power Generation; Power Transmission; or Power Distribution. The Power Engineer’s role is to use their skills to innovate and develop the cutting edge of technology in the sector to meet the criteria of the rapidly changing world. In particular, this means that the apprentice will play a massive part in shifting the energy sector so that that they meet the commitments made to solve the climate crisis, in a financially responsible way.
The apprentices must be highly skilled to face the enormous challenges that the sector is facing. Being innovative and creative is essential to becoming a Power Engineer. Their work requires constant negotiation and cooperation with a variety of interest groups and experts to ensure the new technologies they create are done so in a safe, reliable and cost-effective manner. As such, a Power Engineer needs to have a sound grasp on the needs of stakeholders, the public, safety procedures, communication and leadership.
Completion of this apprenticeship provides eligibility for membership to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET) and can begin work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
