Responsible for the construction and maintenance of the country's electrical power network
Overview
The power network craftsperson was approved for delivery on 12/11/2014. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 30 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
Generally, the apprentice will undertake a variety of tasks that often require an adequate level of physical ability. These include climbing structures, erecting poles or towers, connecting electrical transformers, installing cables in trenches, carrying out electrical switching procedures, install, maintain and dismantle high-voltage apparatus and substation transformers, and driving vehicles filled with equipment. Each apprentice will eventually specialise in one of the three different parts of the UK’s electrical power network. These are overhead lines, underground cables and substation fittings.
The tasks that a Power Network Craftsperson undertakes can be dangerous. This requires strict adherence to several health and safety procedures. As such, the most critical behaviours the apprentice should display are concentration and responsibility. Failure to uphold these qualities endangers not only the apprentice but also their colleagues.
The course will teach the apprentice a range of vital skills and behaviours, that will set them up for their career. Some of the general behaviours include: being able to work with a wide variety of people from different backgrounds, including customers as well as colleagues; how to deliver professional customer service; ability to adapt to the situation whilst continuing to follow strict adherence to rules; and, being able to deal with any changes in the environment to ensure yourself and the team can concentrate on the task at hand.
