Probation Officer

Helping ex-offenders to rehabilitate and reintegrate after release from incarceration

Overview

This Higher probation officer apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 6, non-degree qualification qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 20/08/2019 and typically takes 36 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

The aim of a Probation Officer is to prevent the ex-offender from returning to any possible old habits or communities that might provoke them to re-offend. This serves to protect both the ex-offender and the wider community. As such, the apprentice must learn how to understand the dangers posed to the ex-offender, in terms of what is going to increase the likelihood of re-offense. This often leads to operating and working within numerous organisations and teams to help offer the best support for getting the ex-offender back on track.

There are numerous risks involved with assisting ex-offenders, particularly that they may pose a higher level of risk to you or the wider public than a customer would in another occupation. Therefore, the apprentice will work with a range of support or enforcement organisations, such as local authorities, mental health providers or courts. With offenders often having complex histories and personalities, a good Probation Officer is able to communicate with, listen to and comprehend the needs of the individual they are working with. In turn, this will help ensure the ex-offender is provided the support and guidance they need, and decreasing the likelihood of re-offending.
