Overview
Approved for delivery on the 12/11/2014, the product design and development engineer (degree), Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 6, non-integrated degree upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 60 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
There are numerous components to developing a good product. A Product Design and Development Engineer could take part in any of these stages, whether that is designing a new product, modifying an existing one, or developing a component to a design or product.
What separates this role from other product design occupations is the utilisation of engineering skills and knowledge. As such, comprehensive knowledge of a range of engineering techniques is necessary for success in this apprenticeship. The daily activities will include effectively interpreting or creating product designs, stringently follow legislations or safety regulations, understanding the needs of the consumer, managing potentially valuable resources and using a range of software or technical equipment.
Although the Product Design and Development Engineer’s primary purpose is to apply their engineering expertise, they will need a range of general skills to deliver high-quality products. This includes comprehending the needs of a business and the consumer, being creative whilst remaining contained by legislation, remaining adaptable in the face of regular obstacles, and communicating clearly with a wide range of team members, including helping others when necessary.
