Project Controls Technician

The project controls technician was approved for delivery on 17/08/2017. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 36 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

A Project Controls Technician employs their strong analytic skills to interpret technical information to identify the progress, targets and performance of a project. This occupation is essential to a variety of industries, including engineering, manufacturing, construction, energy and infrastructure. As such, the apprentice will have the opportunity to work in a variety of environments and see how they approach using the techniques in different settings.

The Project Controls Technician will not only identify the progress of a project but also make some critical identifications. These include estimating costs, spotting any future problems and health and safety hazards.

The apprentice will learn a variety of skills during the course. These mostly revolve around the management and evaluation of data, including estimating impacts or creating reports. They will often work with computers and modern software to do so. The apprentice needs to be able to communicate often technical and complex data to the client. In turn, they must also be proficient at working with a wide range of customers or colleagues. For an apprentice to excel, they must commit to paying attention to every detail; being meticulous will ensure that they overlook no essential data. Failure to do so could have severe financial or safety consequences, therefore being able to take account for one’s actions is critical.
