Find, create and maintain props for film, television and theatre productions
Overview
The props technician was approved for delivery on 20/09/2019. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
Prop Technicians are integral to the film, television and theatre productions. They work as part of the backroom team to bring the set to life. It is their job to locate or create all the necessary props for the production. Depending on the company, they may be largely responsible for the entirety of the production’s props or work within a dedicated prop team.
The apprentice must have a variety of skills. To provide the appropriate props, they must have a considerable understanding of the sector and what works well within a show. Interest with the set design will assist in this. In locating the props, the technician must be versatile and resourceful, as the perfect prop will commonly be unavailable. In turn, to excel in the occupation, a technician must have a distinct competency in building and repairing the props and set.
Given the variety of tasks required of a prop technician, they must be an adaptable character. Remaining resourceful and positive in the face of persistent and recurring obstacles will be essential. In turn, creative apprentices will better succeed at overcoming their daily obstacles and improve the end product for the production.
