Designing and creating prosthetic devices as specified by a Prosthetist or Orthotist
Overview
Approved for delivery on the 07/11/2018, the prosthetic and orthotic technician, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
Prosthetic and Orthotic Technicians are responsible for designing and manufacturing any provision for a patient who requires the attachment of external support. This includes prosthetic limbs or bracing. Patients include those who have missing or deformed limbs, or a spine which is not fully formed.
As such, the apprentice will learn how to take the specifications set out by a Prosthetist or Orthotist and design a product which will achieve in supporting the patient. Therefore, understanding the range of clinical conditions which you will be providing for is significant for successful treatment. To achieve the right solution for the patient, the technician will be in frequent discussion with the Prosthetist or Orthotist. Following this, the Prosthetic or Orthotic Technician will carry out the agreed design and construct the device using a variety of materials and tools.
A successful apprentice will have a variety of skills and behaviours. One skill is being able to communicate with a professional about a technical subject. If the patient requires interaction, due to an issue with attachment or for a repaid, it is critical that the apprentice shows compassion, care and is honest.
