Overview
This Higher psychological wellbeing practitioner apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 6, non-degree qualification qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 22/03/2019 and typically takes 12 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
The role of a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner is to assist adult patients in primary care. Primarily, they assess and support those with mild to severe mental health problems, most often those with anxiety and depression. The apprentice would work within the NHS England Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) initiative.
On a day-to-day basis, the apprentice will interact with individuals or groups either via telephone, email, digitally or face-to-face. The practitioner works within a wider team of psychological therapists, who the apprentice would often refer the patient to should they need specialist care. Their work would revolve around patient interaction and assessment, case management and treatment consultation and delivery. The treatment they would prescribe and deliver would be in line with the recommendations made by the NHS. When possible, treatment revolves around enabling patients to self-manage their recovery.
Given the sensitivity of mental health problems, the apprentice would have to be compassionate, understanding and honest. They also must be able to take on the significant responsibility of the role. Failure to adequately develop trust between themselves and the patient could prevent the patient from accessing the appropriate treatment, and discourage them from seeking help with their mental health in the future.
