Overview
Approved for delivery on the 30/09/2019, the public health practitioner (degree), Degree apprenticeship standard provides a level 6, integrated degree upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
A Public Health Practitioner assesses the health risks to the community in their locality. In turn, they develop plans and policies to try and decrease the likelihood of premature deaths. They work within and amongst a range of organisations including local councils, government bodies, agencies, the National Health Service, private enterprises and community agencies such as charities.
The apprentice would work both independently and within a team, both inside and outside their organisation. First, they will discuss and analyse the community’s health risks with professionals and the public. In turn, they will develop risk-assessments, initiating prevention and control programmes. Some such programmes include infection prevention and obesity prevention. Once their organisation approves such plans, the apprentice will learn how to supervise and even lead its development. In turn, they may end up being responsible for the project management, organising resources, people, budgets and facilities.
To excel in this apprenticeship, you will need a range of skills and behaviours. The basis for this degree apprenticeship is a deep understanding of the technical knowledge surrounding healthcare, in order to identify health risks and their solutions. Upon that, being compassionate and understanding will allow the apprentice to approach the public and access the appropriate information.
