Overview

This Higher rail and rail systems engineer apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 5, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 24/09/2018 and typically takes 24 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

A Rail and Rail Systems Engineer is responsible for ensuring the maintenance of the railway tracks and system. Overall, they identify and fix any issues so that use of the railway can continue daily. Additionally, they make sure that the railway is safe and reliable for use by the customer, but also that it is safe for the maintenance team to repair.

To keep the railways functioning, and have a safe maintenance process, the Rail and Rail Systems Engineer will process and plan the repairs to assets or equipment. This requires significant understanding and collaboration with the railway system. In turn, the apprentice will learn how to utilise their knowledge information to plan out a repair project, so the engineers complete it as efficiently as possible. This will also mean working and leading a team of railway engineers to carry out these repairs.

Excelling in this apprenticeship will require a significant and continued dedication to the complex engineering principles. Furthermore, the apprentice must have a keen sense of organising a project with safety and smooth, efficient collaboration at its core.
