Approved for delivery on the 27/06/2018, the rail and rail systems principal engineer (degree), Degree apprenticeship standard provides a level 7, integrated degree upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 48 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The Rail and Rail Systems Principal Engineer is a senior role which plans and guides the rest of the industry according to their specialism. They are responsible for organising and defining what work is needed, liaising with other experts or government officials. The specialisms you could go into are as follows: Rail, Mechanical & Building Services; Rail Signalling and Control; Rail Civils; Rail Track; Network & Digital; Rail Telecoms; Rail Traction & Rolling Stock; Rail Systems & Integration.

The apprentice will go to the site of a potential project and assess what may or may not be needed. Although the occupation requires the apprentice to become a leading expert in their specialism, they must also understand how their role fits into the range of specialisms within the rail system. This will allow them to comprehend what is required fully during the planning and scoping process.

A successful apprentice will need to, principally be able to keep themselves and others motivated in the face of numerous obstacles. These obstacles can vary and are not always just technical problems. In turn, they must excel at leading and communication whilst strictly adhering to health and safety practices.
