What the course covers
The Rail and Rail Systems Engineer occupation is primarily a management role, overseeing the work done on the railway system. The apprentice will need to learn a deep understanding of the operation of the rail system, and how the different experts and teams integrate. Although they are themselves professional engineers, they will be more concerned with the operation of and leading other engineers. The apprentice will work between a technical office, remotely and on the railway worksite.
They have several tasks to complete on a day-to-day basis. These include developing the plans and works proposed by principal engineers. It is their responsibility to ensure their team accomplishes those plans as efficiently and safely as possible. When problems occur, the apprentice will learn how to apply their expertise in the technology, the process and the rail system to ensure work continues.
Their occupation revolves around the leadership of a skilled team of engineers in a dangerous setting. As such, there are a few core behaviours that an apprentice must develop. These are to communicate well, remain resilient and dependable, understand and listen to their workers and colleagues, be determined in the face of obstacles and have the drive to maintain high quality and safety standards.
