Overview
This Higher rail engineering advanced technician apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 4, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 19/04/2016 and typically takes 48 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
The Rail Engineering Advanced Technician will specialise in delivering the safe construction, installation and maintenance of a particular part of the railway network. This specialism could be in railway track, signalling, telecoms, traction & rolling stock, electrification, overhead lines or rail systems. They may carry out these solutions independently or whilst leading a team of engineers. The apprentice will principally either be working in a technical office or on a rail worksite.
This technician’s daily tasks are mostly involved in making sure that the rail system is functioning properly and safely. As such, the apprentice will spend time assessing complex rail systems and components to find any faults and to discover if it requires repairing or replacing. They will also carry out inspections of current or past works to make sure they have been completed to the standards set out in the specification.
As a Rail Engineering Advanced Technician, there are several behaviours the apprentice requires to excel in the occupation. Primarily, due to the dangerous nature of the railway system, they must have a distinct awareness of the necessary safety procedures and follow them appropriately. In turn, their knowledge of the rail system and the technical components will allow them to identify any potential risks.
