Rail Infrastructure Operator

Overseeing the railway infrastructure to ensure the trains are safe and punctual.

Overview

This Intermediate rail infrastructure operator apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 17/08/2017 and typically takes 12 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Rail Infrastructure Operators are responsible for controlling the signals that regulate the safe and punctual movement of trains throughout the rail system. They will work in close contact with a range of specialists, partaking in support of a range of activities, such as emergency response. As such, the apprentice could be working in a variety of environments. This could include working in a small operating office, a large control room or even trackside.

The apprentice will learn some core knowledge, including following strict safety guidelines, but will then specialise. The first option is to specialise in signal operation, in which they regulate the safe movement of all rail transport. The second is to become an electrical controller, where they are responsible for ensuring that there is a constant electrical supply to the rail network. Finally, there is the role of Incident Responder. This job can vary massively, from removing animals from the tracks to supporting major events such as fatalities, or simply working to identify any potential issues, such as checking for weather preparedness.

Whichever specialist occupation the Rail Infrastructure Operator enters, they must constantly be risk-aware, as any lapses in concentration could be fatal for themselves and others. </p
