Railway Engineering Design Technician

Approved for delivery on the 26/03/2015, the railway engineering design technician, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

The Railway Engineering Design Technician specialises in consulting on any design for the railway system. Due to the wide range of tasks that engineers need to plan out across the railway system, the apprentice could be working in several different kinds of company. This includes residing in specialist firms, large multi-national engineering consultancies, contractor organisations or specialist advisory organisations who consult on financing and rail operation.

The several options for a Rail Engineering Design Technician creates numerous different potential tasks and skills for the apprentice. Generally, they will have to apply their technical knowledge of engineering and the rail system to help develop plans. They will likely liaise with a range of specialists and experts, such as surveyors, environmental impact assessors and senior engineers. Overall, clients hire these technicians for their expertise, so a well-developed knowledge of the field is critical.

To excel in this occupation, the apprentice will need a variety of skills. Not only does the Railway Engineering Design Technician provide technical consultation regarding the railway, but provide a perspective on the environmental and commercial impact. In turn, they must be able to think of the bigger picture, whilst having an advanced ability to scrutinise minor details and their potential effects.
