Overview
Approved for delivery on the 27/02/2018, the rehabilitation worker visual impairment, Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 5, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 24 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
A Visual Impairment Rehabilitation Worker helps to evaluate and assist those with visual impairments. Their occupation’s purpose is to assist the patient in feeling as if their impairment does not diminish their lives. The apprentice may work in a range of situations, going to individuals houses or working in a healthcare setting.
The Visual Impairment Rehabilitation Worker is not just working to improve someone’s eyesight, but help them deal with their visual impairment’s physical and mental impact on their daily lives. The apprentice will have to understand visual impairment thoroughly so they can successfully assess the patient, including potential risks to the individual, or how they will best manage it. When relevant, they must understand and suggest appropriate therapies or strategies for the patient, which will involve working with a variety of healthcare specialists.
An apprentice’s success in this occupation will be down to their commitment to the improvement of their patient’s lives, and to understand and keep updated with all new information and technology. In turn, to assess the patient, they must be competent in communication with a diverse range of patients, as well as being able to develop the trust and support of the patient and their family.
