Research Scientist

Conducting scientific research and reporting the analysed results.

Overview

The research scientist was approved for delivery on 13/05/2019. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 7, non-degree qualification qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 30 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Research Scientists are responsible for carrying out any necessary experiments in any scientific or industrial field. In turn, it is their analysis and reports that guide the direction of the scientific and business communities.

Therefore, there is a wide variety of different potential positions or environments in which an apprentice may work. This includes researching in a lab, in a manufacturing plant or outside. Additionally, they will interact with several different experts, specialists and stakeholders.

As research is one step in a long process, the apprentice will have periods of particular types of work. These will include periods of planning research, leading and conducting experiments, analysing results and their impact, reporting to stakeholders if business-related or their colleagues if scientific-based, and managing their research projects.

The Research Scientist has a considerable amount of responsibility for several reasons. As such, the apprentice must, more than anything, be confident and accountable. The core of this responsibility is associated with the potential impact of their work on human life. However, on a smaller scale, they are role models for the scientific community and their associates, so they must profess integrity and leadership in their work.
