Senior Equine Groom

Overview

This Advanced senior equine groom apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 07/08/2018 and typically takes 18 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

A Senior equine groom is responsible for providing and coordinating the delivery of day to day care of horses in the workplace. Apprentices will develop all the necessary skills to lead by example and will have sound industry-specific knowledge to implement an effective system for running the yard. You will be capable of presenting horses to a high standard and can demonstrate the skills required to groom, plait and clip horses.

This apprenticeship standard will allow you to develop sound knowledge of horse anatomy and physiology, including the ability to assess and promote health. You should also be able to recognise and treat common minor injuries and ailments.

Apprentices can expect to handle and provide exercise for a variety of horses in different working environments. You must adhere to safe working practices, be willing to work in all weather conditions and often out of regular working hours. It may also be necessary to live onsite for part or all of the duration of the apprenticeship. You may also have the opportunity to travel nationally or internationally where you will prepare and care for horses at competitions, the races, sales, shows and other public appearances.
