What the course covers

This journalism apprenticeship will be within media businesses such as TV, radio, public relations, communications and print.

You will work alongside colleagues, other businesses and organisations and members of the public to gather information and research for content. Content can be in the form of several mediums including, film, audio, radio and print covering a whole host of genres such as politics, fashion, sport, technology and more.

In some cases, you may be responsible for managing a team, delegating tasks and allocating resources to develop and mentor junior staff, alongside making strategic decisions in unpredictable circumstances. For this, you will need to have an in-depth understanding of audience analytics and how the choices you make could impact performance.

You will be required to make sound editorial judgements that are in line with relevant laws, codes of practice and ethical principles. For the majority of the time, a senior journalist works alone making content and publication decisions and reporting back to an editor. You will also be required to have an understanding of your immediate manager’s role to stand in on occasion when needed.
