Specialist Tyre Operative

Carrying out scheduled and emergency tyre works on heavy and commercial vehicles.

Overview

The specialist tyre operative was approved for delivery on 05/10/2018. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship will involve both scheduled maintenance and emergency response tyre work on predominantly commercial or heavy vehicles. You will be required to work across a variety of locations including motorways, military facilities, construction sites, airports and more.

Part of your role will include making detailed risk assessments to ensure the safety of yourself and others as every vehicle in each location may present different challenges, primarily when it could involve installing or repairing tyres on an HGV that weighs up to 44 tonnes.

You will be equipped with knowledge and expertise that will allow you to operate a wide variety of machinery used for repairing, fitting, lifting, measuring, diagnosing and vehicle geometry. Alongside learning how to communicate effectively with vehicle owners when discussing safety recommendations and any cost implications

Alongside routine maintenance, you will be required to attend emergencies such as a shredded tyre on a motorway, an out of action piece of farming machinery, or a puncture on a construction site. It will be imperative to understand the financial implications not only to the vehicle repair itself but to other factors such as road closures, and delays on building projects and crop harvesting.
