Overview
This Advanced spectacle maker apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 21/12/2016 and typically takes 24 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
This apprenticeship will equip you with the skills and knowledge to produce and repair spectacles to a quality-assured standard. You will create spectacles in a wide variety of prescriptions, finishes, styles and frames.
With this in mind, you will work with a varying range of materials relating to lenses and frames, alongside learning how to operate optical manufacturing tools and equipment. The materials you will be required to work with includes the likes of glass, resin, plastics and metal and equipment will consist of screwdrivers, pliers, drills, tinting baths, lens meters and callipers.
This apprenticeship could take place in a small workshop or a large-scale manufacturing environment. Regardless of your workplace type, you will have to comply with health and safety regulations to ensure the safety of yourself and others when handling materials and disposing of waste.
It will be your responsibility to identify the most appropriate course of action for either manufacturing or repairing of spectacles. You will have to choose the correct process, tools and techniques to provide the desired outcome that meets the quality standards of your organisation.
