Speech and Language Therapist (Integrated Degree)

Overview

Approved for delivery on the 03/07/2019, the speech and language therapist (integrated degree), Degree apprenticeship standard provides a level 6, integrated degree upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 48 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship can take place in a variety of settings including the NHS, the education and justice sectors, local authorities, social enterprises and independent practices.

This apprenticeship will equip you with the knowledge and skills to provide speech, communication, language, eating, drinking and swallowing therapies in a variety of settings. This could be within a nursing home, a hospital, a school, charities and even peoples’ homes.

The primary purpose of this role is to aid in increasing the quality of life, health and well-being of individuals with communication difficulties that could be caused by several different reasons. Individuals may have these difficulties as a result of health conditions such as dementia, strokes, and Parkinson’s, or because of learning disabilities that affect the ability to communicate.

Due to the vast array of causes, you can expect to work with infants, children, young people, adults and senior citizens alongside liaising with doctors, social workers, psychologists, families and carers.

It will be your responsibility to assess, diagnose and provide interventions and management relating to an individual’s communication difficulty. You will be required to work professionally and be responsible for ensuring your knowledge is always up to date.
