Designing a unique process tooling pathway suitable for mass production.
Overview
The tool process design engineer was approved for delivery on 10/07/2020. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 6, non-degree qualification qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 48 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
This apprenticeship is based within the advanced manufacturing industry in particular the sheet and metal presswork supply chain of the aerospace and automotive sectors.
This role will be responsible for the design of a unique tooling process pathway that can be used for mass producing components in the most economical way. A process pathway might include activities such as blanking, piercing, forming and drawing to finish up with a complete component.
You may be manufacturing components for the likes of vehicle doors, aeroplane chassis, car chassis, and bumper beams. You will have to determine which process is most suitable for each component depending on the volume required, choosing from a manually or automatically operated process. It is important that the process creates an output that meets customer specifications and high-quality standards, being accountable for your work whether you are working independently or part of a team.
In this role you will communicate with technical and production directors, senior manager in finance and purchasing, managing directors, suppliers, and operatives on the shop floor. You will typically work a mix between a design office, a board room and a factory floor.
