Driving trains in a safe, economic and punctual way along various routes.

Overview

The train driver was approved for delivery on 13/06/2018. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 12 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship could be based in several settings within this train driving role. You could work with passenger trains, high speed trains, freight, metro, underground, cross border, moving goods, or driving on-track machines needed for maintenance work.

This role will involve working for long periods of time on your own. It is crucial you are able to maintain concentration and be able to make complex decisions quickly. These decisions could relate to severe weather conditions, emergency working and possibly infrastructure failures.

It is important that you are able to communicate effectively with customers and stakeholders, and you may be required to supervise others to ensure compliance with regulations. You will be responsible for all staff, passengers and any goods onboard and your duties may require you to communicate with the likes of signallers, operations control and the British Transport Police.

This role may require shift work on evenings, nights and weekends. You will find that if driving freight or engineering trains you will usually be on more night shifts and any long-distance journeys may require an overnight stay.
