Overview

Approved for delivery on the 26/01/2018, the tunnelling operative, Intermediate apprenticeship standard provides a level 2, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 12 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship role involves assisting with excavation, support and the forming of tunnels and shafts underground. There will be various methods used including, machine tunnelling, hand tunnelling, sprayed concrete lining, pipejacking, drill and blast and shaft sinking.

Within this role you will work as part of a larger team, having responsibility for moving, handling and conveying materials, components and resources alongside guiding and controlling the operation of the plant, machinery and vehicles.

When working underground and undertaking tunnel activities you will work safely adhering to workplace health, safety and welfare requirements, following correct tunnel entry systems and reacting appropriately in an emergency following correct escape procedures.

You will be required to operated powered tools, units and pedestrian plant machinery and equipment, specific to the operation or activity you are carrying out. Alongside this you will install and support back-up systems for ventilation, pressurisation, water supply and communication services.

You will be required to work both individually and as part of a team, complying with quality requirements associated with the specific activities and tunnel operations. You will be responsible for your own work including the checking of machinery, lifting accessories and plant equipment.
