Overview

The underkeeper was approved for delivery on 10/07/2020. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship is based within the game and wildlife management sector and involves the participation of habitat management, pest control and animal husbandry for a shooting enterprise.

You will be responsible for the production of game birds alongside conservation activities beneficial to other flora and fauna, providing assistance on shoot days and carrying out routine estate management. This will involve feeding wild birds, rearing game, looking out for and responding to common diseases and raising animals with the highest level of welfare and consideration of their needs. On a shoot day you will be required to check all equipment is ready to use, welcome guests, and help with briefings alongside taking care of any gundogs.

Within this role you will interact with a range of different individuals including senior gamekeepers, estate managers, paying guests, police, land users and the public. Your duties may require you to work unsociable hours, possibly in challenging conditions due to being outdoors all of the time.
