Tiling walls and floors

Overview

The wall and floor tiler was approved for delivery on 23/11/2018. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 30 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

As an apprentice on this standard, you will carry out tiling work on walls and floors in a range of domestic and commercial settings and environments, including houses, factories, offices and construction sites.

You will learn how to prepare your workspace using primers and levelling compounds, set out your area by measuring it in accordance with work requirements, and mark and cut tiles to fit them around obstacles such as pipers and plug sockets. To do this, you will learn how to select and safely use the appropriate tools and equipment for the job, ensuring minimal material wastage to improve efficiency. You will also learn how to identify and replace damaged tiles with causing damage to their surroundings, and identify common preparation, fixing and installation problems.

You will be responsible for the quality of your work, and the safety of both yourself and others in the workplace. You will need to have strong attention to detail and communication skills to interact with your customers and confirm their requirements, and liaise with suppliers that provide you with the materials and resources for your work.
