Water Treatment Technician

Developing, installing and maintaining water treatment programmes for water systems.

Overview

The water treatment technician was approved for delivery on 18/02/2019. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 24 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Water treatment programmes are in place to minimise health risks such as legionnaires disease, reduce system corrosion, scale formation and to prevent microbiological contamination. The primary purpose of this apprenticeship standard is to develop the necessary skills to build, install and maintain these water treatment programmes in a variety of settings.

Apprentices may work on water systems in industrial and commercial buildings, hotels and institutional premises such as colleges, schools, hospitals and care homes. The water in these systems is used for many purposes depending on the site, such as drinking, washing, heating and cooling, energy transport, power generation, industrial washing and cleaning, food production and healthcare.

Apprentices on this course will work for Specialist Service Providers who maintain water conditions for a particular site. Service providers guarantee this maintenance in one of three ways: directly by site management, by site maintenance contractors, or through facilities management organisations. You will work independently with minimal supervision in both occupied and unoccupied building. You will develop your own supervisory and leadership skills as you may have to guide lower-level water treatment operatives and site staff to complete their tasks.
