Wireless Communications Rigger

This Intermediate wireless communications rigger apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 22/03/2019 and typically takes 18 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

A wireless communication rigger works as part of a two or three-person team supporting the UK’s cellular network and its infrastructure. Apprentices will be working at the forefront of the nationwide rollout of 5G networks, as well as maintaining existing 2G, 3G and 4G networks. Throughout the apprenticeship, you will learn to install large steel structures on towers and rooftops, whilst also adapting any existing systems if necessary

As a wireless communications rigger, some of your daily responsibilities will include the lifting and lowering of equipment for installation or removal, install a range of cable sizes such as Coaxial, CAT5/6 and Fibre Optic and interpret drawings. Possibly most importantly, you must be able to display a range of climbing techniques and be confident in rescuing other colleagues in difficulty at a height.

This is a physically demanding role, and apprentices must be comfortable working at a height, and outdoors in various temperatures and weather conditions. You will be working in a variety of environments include rooftop sites, towers and masts in greenfield sites, and inner-city buildings. Throughout the apprenticeship, you will develop your communication and teamwork skills as wireless communication riggers are often in close contact with site providers, landlords and members of the public.
