What the course covers

This apprenticeship sits within the manufacturing sector, at the engineering end of woodworking. During this role, you will be producing wood products for the construction and furniture industries, and supplying the housing, commercial, public and building sectors. Apprentices can work in any number of businesses ranging from small to large. However, those who work across a variety of wood products are most likely to work in medium-sized organisations and those with a wood or product specialism in a larger corporation.

Your primary aim as a wood product manufacturing operative is to produce high volume, repetitive, engineered products from timber, to meet a variety of specifications for both internal and external application. Some the products you may be producing include roofing components, windows, doors, door-sets, staircases, trussed rafters, spandrel panels, metal web beams and I-beams. Apprentices will learn to complete each stage of production to a high standard, cutting, laying out and assembling the materials to a specification.

Most commonly, wood product manufacturing operatives work individually, taking responsibility for the quality of whatever you produce. However, you may also work within a larger production team, and you will always report to a production supervisor or manager. Your workplace will depend on the size and specialism of your employer but can range from a small workshop to a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.
