What the course covers
Apprentices in this role will work in a small team of two or three crewmembers, working on a wide variety of specialist vessels. Typically, these boats are less than 24 meters in length and can include tugs, multipurpose workboats, fast pilot boats, and crew transfer vessels which take people out to ships or infrastructure offshore. You will work in a mixture of marine environments, providing a range of services within a port or inland waterway, including surveys or towage. Furthermore, you will learn to support significant salvage operations wreck removals.
Due to the small crew, apprentices will learn how to work on their own with minimal supervision. For example, if the Master is unable to leave the wheel or is for any reason, incapacitated. The core tasks you will carry out can be split into six primary areas: Communications, Navigation, Berthing, Towing and Moorings, Personnel transfers and Cargo handling. Within these areas some of your daily responsibilities will include using VHF and UHF radios, manoeuvring the boat and checking position with bridge equipment, using winches to handle ropes and ensuring the safe passage of people and products.
