Bricklaying Apprenticeships

Very much as it sounds, the bricklaying apprenticeship teaches how to build and repair structures using bricks, blocks, mortar and other fabrication materials. It is a job that is best suited to someone who is good with their hands but is perhaps not the most academically minded. The apprenticeship starts at Intermediate (Level 2) so it should be open to most levels of academic achievement.

What is a Bricklaying Apprenticeship?

You will be based on construction sites where you will learn the skills involved in building structures from bricks and mortar. This will be heavy work as you may have to carry quantities of bricks from location to location so a high level of strength and fitness is desirable.

You will learn health and safety rules for the construction site as well as this specialism in bricklaying. These skills will help you in your future career.

What Are the Benefits of Bricklaying Apprenticeships?

There are obvious fitness benefits from doing a largely manual job and there are also financial benefits to take into account, with the average annual salary for “brickies” being around £42,000 per annum. This shows that there is a real need for people with this level of expertise on construction sites around the UK, and your skills will be in great demand.

What Does a Bricklaying Apprenticeship Involve?

Bricklaying apprenticeships conform to the usual apprenticeship standards and this means that no matter where in the country you did your apprenticeship, you should learn the same skills and be trained to the same high calibre.

Apprenticeships are 80% on-the-job training and 20% off-the-job training, with both components paying the same, so you will be earning while you are learning your trade and also while you are undertaking the academic component of the apprenticeship.

Are You Suited to a Bricklaying Apprenticeship?

To become a bricklaying apprentice you will need to be motivated and not afraid to muck in and work hard. You will most likely be on-site with a construction crew who will be relying on the work that you do in order to be able to complete their own assignments. This means that you should be able to complete work fast and to a good standard and you should have a good temperament as construction sites are known for being a little rowdy and raucous.
