Gardening Apprenticeships

Landscaping and gardening is an industry where there is always scope for new people and businesses to make an impact in their local area. There are always people who require assistance in maintaining their green space, either because of disability, age or the sheer size and scope of their space.

Many people will outsource the gardening duties in the same way that they would hire a cleaner. They maybe earn a bit more and feel like they can afford to outsource some of the tasks that they find tedious.

What are Gardening Apprenticeships?

Gardening apprenticeships can take place with either a gardening business in the local area or a municipal gardening service such as one run by the local authority, maintaining public parks and the like. They will teach the skills necessary to provide an effective gardening and landscaping service which is respectful of the local environment, while at the same time tidying and beautifying the area.

The Benefits of Gardening Apprenticeships

Gardening apprenticeships allow young people to acquire skills that are in high demand and to improve their prospects in life. Although gardening is somewhat of a luxury, it is something that is still required, even when the economy is slow, as nobody wants to have a jungle in their garden and public parks will always need to be pleasant environments for families and children to visit.

What Does a Gardening Apprenticeship Involve?

As with all apprenticeships, you will be working for the company your apprenticeship is with for 80% of the time and 20% of your time will be spent studying toward a qualification in your area of specialisation. There are varying apprenticeship levels, which correspond to levels of educational attainment, according to which apprenticeship standard you are studying under.

You will learn the theoretical side of gardening in your courses, learning things like which weedkillers are safe to use in certain environments and how best to deal with certain invasive species that you may come across, such as Japanese Knotweed which requires a very specific type of disposal and is subject to legal restrictions.

Are You Suited for a Gardening Apprenticeship?

Gardening apprenticeships and jobs in this area tend to be quite physically demanding so they are really only suited for people who are quite fit anyway. It is not all done using ride-on lawnmowers, there is still a large amount of grass-cutting using a normal lawn mower and you will likely be expected to be down on your hands and knees planting flowers and digging out weeds. If you would struggle to do this for any length of time then a gardening apprenticeship is likely not for you.

You will also have to be able to work independently and accurately follow instructions. If this is something that you struggle with, you may sometimes need to ask for additional clarification about what something means, or what is required.

You will almost certainly meet members of the public in your role, even though you are not considered to be in a job that is heavily public-facing. You should be courteous and patient when explaining aspects of the job to them and never come over as patronising, as this will get you into trouble at work.
