Police Apprenticeships
If you’re interested in a career in policing and want to gain valuable hands-on experience while learning, a police apprenticeship may be the right choice for you.
What is a Police Apprenticeship?
Police apprenticeships are training programs designed to provide young individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to become police officers. A police apprenticeship is an alternative to the traditional route of obtaining a degree in policing or criminal justice.
What are the Benefits of a Police Apprenticeship?
Police apprenticeships offer a practical, hands-on experience that is essential for a career in policing. Apprentices are mentored by experienced police officers and have the opportunity to work on real cases and attend training exercises.
Apprenticeships are a cost-effective way to enter the police force as they don’t require payment of tuition fees. Instead, apprentices will be paid a competitive salary while they receive training. For more information, see the National Living Wage for Apprenticeships.
What does a Police Apprenticeship Involve?
The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) usually lasts three years to complete, with the option to specialise in your third year. It combines both on-the-job training and off-the-job training, in the form of academic classroom-based theory and learning. This is common with all apprenticeship standards in the UK.
Apprentices work alongside experienced police officers and attend regular training sessions to develop their knowledge of police procedures and laws. They’re also given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through practical exercises and work placements.
Upon completion of the PCDA, you will undertake the End Point Assessment (EPA) which will determine whether you pass or fail the apprenticeship. Successful apprentices will receive a Level 6 Degree in Professional Policing Practice.

Am I Suitable for a Police Apprenticeship?
In order to be eligible for a police apprenticeship in the UK, applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass a series of rigorous physical and mental exams. They must also have a minimum of five GCSEs, including English and Maths, at grade C or above.
You’ll need to deal with complex and sensitive cases, using your problem-solving abilities to think on your feet. Good communication skills and people skills are a must, along with the ability to remain calm and patient in stressful or volatile situations.
