What Are Social Work Apprenticeships?
You will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a social work setting. This may be office based or you may be part of a team that does outreach work in the community. The placement will usually be with a local authority or sometimes a local housing provider and you will be tasked with assisting people in some difficult situations in their lives.
The Benefits of Social Work Apprenticeships
Social work apprenticeships can be quite emotionally draining work but they can also be very rewarding and teach you the benefits of working closely in a team with colleagues. This is also an area where there are currently skills gaps following the pandemic and the effects of Brexit when a great many experienced staff left. This affords you an opportunity to dig in and stake your claim for an excellent job that will stand you in good stead going forward.
There are excellent prospects in social work careers and as a local government employee, you will be employed in the public sector rather than the private sector. While there are often pay disputes etc in the public sector, it is unlikely that you will lose a job due to your place of work closing, though there may be some downsizing across departments from time to time.
What Does a Social Work Apprenticeship Involve?
A social work apprenticeship will be regulated by the relevant apprenticeship standards. These standards were put in place so that employers could be sure that any apprentice who has completed a specific apprenticeship will have the appropriate skills for the job at the end of it.
The way that this is ensured is by the End Point Assessment, where the knowledge and skills of the apprentice are tested against what is required for the apprenticeship standard. After successfully passing the End Point Assessment, the academic award will be made and the apprenticeship will have been successfully completed.
You will earn while you learn and will be paid during the 80% on-the-job training as well as the 20% off-the-job training that is part of all apprenticeship standards in the UK.
Are You Suited for a Social Work Apprenticeship?
Social work apprenticeships can be challenging mentally and you will need to be able to deal with stress in order to be successful in this field. You will be dealing with people who will sometimes be at their lowest ebb and you will need the right kind of temperament to be able to handle this. People who have struggled with depression previously may find this an especially challenging apprenticeship and area of work in general.
