Overview

This Higher district nurse apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 7, non-degree qualification qualification. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

The broad role of a district nurse is to provide care for patients and communities of people with a wide range of health conditions. You may work across a range of healthcare settings including treating patients within their own home, care homes, GP-practices, hospitals and hospices.

In their daily work, a district nurse will interact with patients, their carers or relatives, and a wide variety of health and social care professionals such as GP’s, social workers and hospital staff. You will work with patients of all ages and with a range of medical needs. As an autonomous, independent practitioner, you will be responsible for managing your own caseload while contributing and leading the collaborative work of the wider healthcare team. You will plan, provide and monitor complex nursing care and services, and can expect to work with the same patients, such as those with terminal illnesses or long-term disabilities, for prolonged periods.

You will be responsible for contributing to the delivery of care across a 24-hour period, 365 days a year. This means you should expect to take a variety of shift patterns and anticipate to work more frequently during times of crises.
