Maintaining large green spaces such as parks and horticultural gardens.
Overview
This Advanced landscape or horticulture supervisor apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 12/12/2018 and typically takes 36 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
This gardening apprenticeship introduces you to the role of supervising large green areas such as public parks and gardens, historic gardens, private gardens and estates, or in production nurseries and retail outlets. Different businesses specialise in various areas of green space supervising, for example, some companies focus on grounds maintenance, known as soft-landscaping. In contrast, others deal with landscape construction, known as hard-landscape. This means that the daily tasks and focus of the apprenticeship will depend on each employer.
This apprenticeship is split into two areas because of the vastly varying content of each. A landscape supervisor focuses on the construction and installation of features; this includes site management and the application of the correct landscape materials. The other option is to train as a horticulture supervisor who specialises in plant propagation and plant growth.
Both roles require an understanding and dedication to the importance of green spaces, especially within the public domain and how different green spaces require different agricultural and horticultural supervision. As well as the practicalities of green space supervision, apprentices will develop an understanding of the business side of the role, including the planning process, work schedule, and working to a close specification and budget.
