Overview
The sonographer (degree) was approved for delivery on 16/08/2019. This Degree apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 6, integrated degree qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 36 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
This apprenticeship is based within the Healthcare sector, typically in the NHS or private hospitals and clinics.
This apprenticeship will equip you with the knowledge and skill to conduct screening and diagnostic ultrasound examinations using highly specialised scanning equipment to examine the anatomy and identify health problems.
As a Sonographer, you will perform a wide variety of clinical ultrasound examinations, including those that relate to women’s health and pregnancy, cancer detection, vascular, abdominal, and musculoskeletal problems. The examinations require a high level of hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and interpersonal skills. Interpersonal skills are essential as you will be interacting with patients, members of the public, carers and family members, alongside a variety of healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, midwives and radiographers.
You will be required to work independently managing your own workload and specialist equipment, but you will also be part of a wider clinical team. Usually, you will report to advanced practitioners, and you may supervise junior healthcare assistants and clinical support workers.
It is essential to comply with statutory and departmental policies relating to health and safety, safeguarding, accurate record-keeping, infection control and complaint procedures.
