As we work towards our net zero goals, there’s a growing need for more sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. Green apprenticeships are the perfect option for anyone passionate about building a sustainable future for the UK while also developing their practical skills.
In this blog, we’ll explore what green apprenticeships are all about and how they can kickstart your career so you can reach your full potential.
What Are Green Apprenticeships?
Green apprenticeships focus on industries that promote sustainability. They include renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management, and sustainable construction. These apprenticeships are all about learning the ropes of these sustainable sectors. This is done through a mix of hands-on training (on-the-job training) and theoretical knowledge (off-the-job training). Ultimately, by developing a skilled workforce, green apprenticeships help us tackle climate change head-on.
In fact, green apprenticeships are considered of such importance that six programmes were hand-picked by industry experts to mark the 2023 Coronation. This was done in recognition of their sustainability credentials. The six apprenticeships are:
- Countryside Worker (level 2)
- Forest Craftsperson (level 3)
- Low Carbon Heating Technician (level 3)
- Installation Electrician and Maintenance Electrician (level 3)
- Sustainability Business Specialist (level 7)
- Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Practitioner (level 4)
According to the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE), these apprenticeships “represent the gold standard for green skills and will pave the way for hundreds more”. We’ll explore these in greater detail shortly.
Benefits of Green Apprenticeships
Let’s talk about why green apprenticeships are such a fantastic opportunity:
Develop your skills
First off, as an apprentice, you’ll gain valuable skills, knowledge, and experience in green industries. You’ll work alongside industry professionals guiding you through your apprenticeship programme. Along the way, you’ll receive mentorship and feedback to help you develop your skills while gaining invaluable, hands-on industry experience.
Employment prospects
Did you know the low-carbon and renewable energy sector alone employed over 274,000 people in the UK in 2021? That’s a massive 22% increase on the previous year! Therefore, with the demand for green skills on the rise, you’ll have a wide range of long-term employment prospects in sustainable sectors.
Earn while you learn
On top of all this, you’ll even earn a wage while you’re learning! This means that you’ll not only complete your studies debt-free but you’ll likely be financially stable as you progress to full-time employment. In contrast, students graduating from UK universities have an average student loan debt of £28,000.
Green Apprenticeships in Practice
Enough talk, let’s see green apprenticeships in action! From renewable energy to sustainable agriculture, environmental consulting to green technology, there’s no shortage of exciting career paths to explore.
