Learning and Development Apprenticeships

This is a great apprenticeship to get into if you are interested in helping other people to develop their skills through classes and workshops. Identifying the needs of the businesses that you work with and helping to implement the necessary changes to enhance the learning and development across the organisation can be extremely rewarding.

What Are Learning and Development Apprenticeships?

Learning and development apprenticeships will give you the skills to pursue a career in the L&D space. It is quite a broad area and it involves identifying where there are skills gaps in an organisation and then working to rectify that. This can take the form of organising courses yourself, or buying in outside courses, depending on the budget and resources that are available.

You will learn how to audit the skills of those already at the company in order to assess where they currently sit and to identify what is missing from the skills mix that could improve outcomes.

The Benefits of Learning and Development Apprenticeships

Learning and development apprenticeships allow you to gain a strategic overview of how companies work and the skills that they need to function at peak efficiency. These are valuable skills to be able to obtain and companies are always looking to find measurable and impactful ways to improve what they do.

Gaining a good reputation in this field should see plenty of opportunities for you moving forward, even more so with the challenges that come through managing the learning of hybrid and fully remote teams.

What Does a Learning and Development Apprenticeship Involve?

All of the apprenticeship standards in the UK follow the format of 80% workplace learning and 20% off the job learning. This is true of the learning and development apprenticeships also. You will be paid for 100% of your time spent on the apprenticeship whether that is the classroom based component or the workplace part.

There are two different levels on offer. One is a learning and development practitioner and the other is a learning and development consultant and business partner.

Both of these options have different levels of academic achievement attached to them with the practitioner course being set at level 3 and the consultant and business partner apprenticeship being set at level 5

Are You Suited for a Learning and Development Apprenticeship?

Learning and development apprenticeships are best suited for those who have good communication skills and get on well with people. There will be a lot of interpersonal relationships involved and you will be asked to find out a lot about people’s skill levels in a number of different areas in order to help them to improve.

You need to be able to think strategically and to understand how the work you are doing to train people in various skills aligns with the goals of the business.
